Skipping Christmas Day 16

LAST DAY OF THE TRIP!!!

Today we had to double up our museum viewing. I normally only like to do one museum a day but because of the holiday schedule we had to do two on our last day in Rome. We had tried to go to the Capitoline Museum on December 31st but they had closed in the early afternoon for the holiday.

Museum courtyard; foot and head of Constantine.

The famous Capitoline Wolf! Click Here For More Info.

Bernini's Medusa head.

Hercules.

Large statue of Marcus Aurelius. This statue used to be right outside the
museum but it was replaced with a copy to preserve it.

(Outside the museum with the statue copy).

Never ending sculpture.

Late pasta lunch. Most days we skip lunch and have
a large dinner but not on a 2 museum day.

Outside the Galleria Borghese! This is located in the park we walked around the day before. You are only allowed in the museum every 2 hours with a pre-purchased ticket that has a reserved time on it. There are only 300 slots per 2 hour time frame. One of the first things we did when we got to Rome was go online and buy our tickets. We definitely should have bought them sooner because this was the soonest we could get in for the week- all the other times were sold out!

No pictures were allowed in the museum but it was probably the best museum I have ever been to. The art was amazing and the 300 people spread out so no one area was crowded.

Here is a link about the Galleria Borghese: Click Here.

There was a lot of amazing art at the museum; most notably some incredible sculptures by Bernini. (Click on each name if you would like to read more about them.)

After the museum it was time to get our last dinner in Rome. We took the subway and made it back to the best pizza in Rome which had been previously closed. As you can see in the picture it looks a lot like our other favorite pizza place. The guy behind the counter gave us a full description of each pizza choice. It was a hard decision but I think we did alright!

The place was very busy and there was only one little counter where you could stand and eat.
Most people got the pizza to go.

Outside the delicious pizza stop. We thought this was an excellent way to end our marathon trip; just having gone to the best art museum and eating some of the best pizza.

Overall this was one of our most memorable trips we have ever taken. It was very long but really amazing too. I still can't believe how many ruins we were able to fit in. Cruising was a lot of fun and our time in Rome was very special. It was great but we were both looking forward to our quiet German life again. I declare Skipping Christmas to be a total success!

  1. I really liked this post...Marcus Aurelius is famous for saying one of my favorite quotes of all time...." a man's life is painted the color of his imagination" . Thanks for the lovely photos of his statue. JRJ
