Walkingshaws Part 2

After our nice stay in Marburg we picked up our rental car and hit the road! On the way to the Rhine valley we saw this castle from afar and stopped to take a look.

The castle turned out to be the administrative headquarters for the little town. This meant you could not go inside but you were free to explore the grounds.

Eric checking out the great view.

Another castle in the distance!

There was this sign at the castle; Eric thought it meant 'The nuns are over there' and I thought it meant 'Nuns go this way'. We did not find any conclusive evidence either way.

After our castle stop we made it to our final destination: Bacharach!
This was our bed and breakfast.

Eric and I had this huge balcony!

On our walk into town we got to walk by this 'Magical Easter Wonderland' as Eric called it.

We took this trail up the hill, there were great views and an
old castle that now is a youth hostel.

The Rhine valley is all about wine; all the hillsides were covered in vineyards.

Castle / Youth Hostel at the top.

On the way back down we walked by this arch ruins, one of the icons of the town.

And here is the tower that is the other icon of Bacharach!

Both the tower and the arches from across the hillside.

This was a restaurant we went to dinner at; we had a nice meal and super delicious home made apple strudel. The lady that owns the restaurant spoke excellent English and used to run a restaurant in Marburg!

Apple strudel- double ice cream!

The next day we went on a short river cruise where we saw.... castles!

After our afternoon cruise we walked around the city some more and went to a wine tasting.

The wines were delicious!

Outside after the wine tasting.

Pretty door!

 Breakfast at the B&B.

We took the car down the road to check out some cool castles. The thing about castles on the Rhine is that they are all at the top of big hills- here we are making our way up!

This castle was great!! The architecture was amazing and so were the views.

Outsides of castles are way cooler than insides; this one was no exception.

This was the point where you took a super narrow staircase way up to get to a tower.

There is Dale at the bottom of the stairs!

After we were done exploring the castle I strong armed everyone into eating at the cafe. Eric didn't want to eat here because he was going to have to walk to the bottom and add more time on the car. My sound reasoning won and we all ordered these salmon pesto sandwiches which were....AMAZING! Everyone continued to mention these sandwiches for the rest of the trip.

I also strong armed us into ordering this chocolate banana flammkuchen. Eric said he wasn't interested but then we had to hold him back from licking the board, it was also delicious.

We ate lunch at a castle with a great view of the Rhine- win win!

After the castle we decided to do... another castle!
We literally drove 5 minutes down the road to get to this one.

This is all the inside looked like. THOUSANDS of antlers on white walls.
'I use antlers in all of my decorating...'

Come on up Eric! You are missing the antlers!

We did find this rock collection for Dale.

Outsides of castles, always cooler.

This castle did have a lot of weird displays trying to get you to have your wedding here- like these creepy mannequins in sort of bridal gear. There were also awkward photo displays.

Bacharach success! Stay tuned for more Walkingshaw travels,
more fine dining and castles to be had!
